Habemus Calcetin...

Emigremos hacia nuestras raices...

Image

A cracked needle

Image
we all have been there, a knitting needle breaks and we are half way in a project.  What to do, what to do?...

Post Exilic

Image
It's been a very long time my dears, I feel like it has been a decade, but I know it has only been over a year since I step foot in this place, my safe place, my happy place! This past year has been hectic, busy to the max, I was the adult in charge of having three kids at home for schooling.  My sister needed help and I had to, I'm a big sucker for those kids, they are the cutest thing ever and as I always repeat, I like the bad life!! 🙊 This hard season was a time to reflect, review and evaluate priorities.  I have come to termns that I love to Blog, even though I do not do it often.

Welcome 2020

Image
I have been MIA for a while, enjoying everything that is outside of the cyber world, this was not to be forever but as a vacation to enjoy the holidays and of course the family that had time off from school and work. Starting this year I have modified a bit the blog to start afresh and also to give me motivation to create and tell you a bit more about it with a new atmosphere. Things that changed are: 1.- Blog theme 2.- Blogs I go to, to learn, to entertain & to discover. Also this year my word to live by came super late, just the weekend before New Year's,  •••embrace yourself••• •••this is an amazing challenging one••• FOCUS To be FOCUS is super challenging, I have so much to learn from this.  I have pride myself to be organize but now that this word came to challenge me, I see that there is so much to learn and improve. Things I want to accomplish... 1.- Involve myself a bit more with this new Volunteer job I started ( I have already finished all my studies...

Hat, a Fall/Winter affair

Image
I want to apologize for the late post, supposedly I left it ready to load this morning, early but something went wrong and did not post - Quiero Disculparme por lo tarde de esta entrada, la programe para que saliera en la mañana, pero algo sucedio y no salio. x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x This post is part of the Back to Blogger incentive.  This month with the letter  H I love hats, hats are my second favorite knitted accessory for Fall and specially for Winter.  They are so versatile and also you can make them with very little material.  Either in yarn or thread. I started one that I love, because you can use bits of left over and get an amazing combination. Sunset Hat on Ravelry I have not finished mine but wanted to share cause I'm knitting it with this palette that lately yarn clubs sell by bits. Updated - Actualizado  Finished hat - Gorro terminado This was a present for my nephew’s bday - Fue un regalo para mi sobrino en su cumpleaños  I also wanted...

The empowered Frida

Image
Frida Kahlo was just fierce! She wore clothes that were at the time for men Refused to shave/wax her hair as the women of her time. She wore lots of colours, specially on her head. She was always exposing women's every day issues, like miscarriages, menstruation, sickness etc She was bold for the era.. I decided to include myself on this month Posting Challenge number 115, hosted by El Ovillo de Eli Anyone participating needed to post about something with Frida Kahlo and since what I do best is knitting and crocheting, I decided to create a head band out of flowers.   I created the knitted band that was going to be the base for the flowers in regular knit/purl stitch, with a piece of elastic to make it easier to put it on. This was a great idea for me, since I have lots of yarn leftover from other projects that I always keep around in case something needs just bits of material. La empoderada Frida Frida Kahlo fue feroz! Ella llevaba ropa que era en es...

Elephant - our E of the month

Image
Did you know that...  There are three different species of elephant – the African Savannah elephant, the African Forest elephant and the Asian elephant. Elephants are known for their large ears, tusks made of ivory and their trunks – which are actually a fusion of their nose and upper lip. But my Elephant  came from a pattern in Etsy named ELA . I found her casually, I was looking for something to write about for July in our BacktoBlogger post and through my list of possibilities I found Elephant and started my search for something with them but after a whole day, I got nothing. So since the internet works with algorithms, my phone had the trace about elephants and my Instagram sent me a nice knitted picture of the above pattern and the rest is history. I modified the dress a bit to have a little of lace, see below diagram in case you want to copy my idea. I knitted mine in 100% cotton, "peaches & cream", used a left over thread from another project that I will...

Patterns

Image
I'm a knitter that strongly dislike seams on my knits, meaning any knits that are made by parts and needs to be put together by stitching parts together.  I rather knit everything at once. So, many times I alter the pattern to fix my personal choice. Mostly I start my projects top down if it is a sweater or top. What is your personal preference? Here are two projects knitted from top to bottom, Aqui dos tejidos de arriba hacia abajo, a blue dress in thin cotton thread that I bought while travelling in Chile un vestido azul en algodón delgado que compre mientras visitaba Chile I followed thi...

B is for Baby Knits

Image
Melina came 3 weeks ahead of her self.  She came full swing, unexpectedly.  But we did her baby shower just the weekend before. Here is what we knitted and crocheted for her.  She is so loved and waited for. This blanket was done in crochet in Caron Cake for hats, mix of Cotton and viscose with a cotton lining done by mom, to make it soft to the touch | Esta frazada fue tejida a crochet en una mescla de Algodon y viscosa de la marca Caron Cake, con tela al reverso en algodón para que sea suave al tocar...

Not the winter blues

Image
#Colours #Colores Researchers say that Feb is the month where the winter blues pay the yearly visit to make sure you remember that is very cold outside (North hemisphere) and that by now if you bought with a credit card your Christmas presents will be seeing the reality of your financial miss behave back in December. But not this gal!! I usually start buying my Christmas presents in May/June by cash or order online with the money upfront, so in February I have nothing to be regretting myself about.  Even when it comes to the weather I'm very content with the snow and the beautiful scenery. Colors are a nice way to brighten up the hues of winter for those that do not enjoy the grays, blues and dark.  You can change the pillows of the couch or a bright sheet on your bed.  You can always knit or crochet a nice blanket in a beautiful spring color to bring a smile to your face.

Crescendo

Image
Hello all, As stated on a previous post, I have been MIA because of healing and time.   But here I am back at it with the latest project! I love the word crescendo, means a sound that get louder by passing time, starts slowy and gets bigger by the second. This shawl is like that, starts small with the same stitch but as you progress goes bigger and bolder, making an statement when finished. This was done in 100% cotton.  For my sister’s friend mom that is battling ALS and spends a lot of time at the hospital.  Means a lot to her and I can say no to my lil sister, she is more my kid than my sister.

Vintage knitting

Image
Vintage knitting is always something we knitters enjoy.  Whether we buy patterns or see a piece on a television show and we want to copy it, we do our best to try to make it happen. A few years back I bought quite a few patterns with a vintage flair.  Most of them from Alana Dakos from Never not knitting .   I have all her e-books and also a few of her individual patterns.   Among those I have a magazine published in 2012 that she contributed - a vintage collection - Jane Austen Knits I personally love this edition, it is fill with knitting goodness that I don’t have time to knit but that I keep because I never loose hope of knitting one day.   There is a pattern that is called Pleated Neck Scarf that now you can also find in ravelry as an individual pattern that I hope to knit eventually.  Let’s hope for this year!! And now talking about vintage, how about all the patterns showed in the Outlander serie?! - have you seen them?!  I ca...

Destash

Image
Have you ever been in a place where you have saved too much yarn scraps from other projects? I sure have. I have a blanket going on with just scraps from other projects but I still have a lot that needs to be used if not tossed away.  So my family does not feel overwhelmed with the clutter. So going on my Instagram feed I saw a few instagramers knitting a blanket with bits and pieces Click on image to see the profile This gave me an idea, why not a colorful shawl? Here more ways to DeStash - Pinterest My friend Carmen Tye is the queen of destashing, please visit her to see her ideas. LIMPIANDO RETAZOS...

Be intencional!

Image
There are certain materials that are hard to knit, some you might not even know how to knit or you are just skeptical to try. Ask questions to the pros! Instagram is a great tool to ask questions, post a picture, wait a few days for the answer and then decide what to do. You are not loosing anything, you will earn knowledge that you currently do not have. I personally like to ask questions, even though I have knitted for over 30 years, I do not know everything, but I surely like to learn. I asked on Instagram on a Story post how to knit certain yarn that to me looked more like a sewing garland then a yarn but my mom insisted it was a yarn.  Sure enough she was right. Let me tell you a bit about this material... Mom is the queen of Yar sales/Garage sales, in some of those outing she found this funny looking yarn, in two colors. Red - only one ball White - 5 balls Fluffy, cute but weird She does knit too but I guess when she actually wanted to knit this material, it wa...

Fibers and caring

Image
Some people only knit or crochet with high end fibers. Which is amazing if you have the budget for it. I usually buy good expensive yarns if the project is for someone super special or if the client is willing to pay for the material plus the labour, which becomes pretty expensive as any project takes time and that equals to money/hr of labour. My all time favorite place to buy is Knit picks as it always have sales on good quality yarn. Now I have preference when it comes to non expensive fibers, those bought either at Michael’s or Walmart here in Canada, in cotton or bamboo base yarns.  Specially if they are for lil ones, as their skin is very delicate. Other personal fav is thread that family sends from Chile.  Most af them are cotton base and have a bit of viscose for flexibility.  Hyperallergenic and amazing to knit for babies and also for our all time favourite, shawls!  I always recomend to read the labels for caring, I usually wash my knits in ...
